College Alumnus Receives 2009 FAU National Alumni Association
Hall of Fame Award
On Wednesday, April 29, 2009, the FAU National Alumni Association recognized Jay Salkini BS ’85 MS ’90, President and Chief Executive Officer, Tecore Networks, as the recipient of the 2009 Hall of Fame award. On Thursday, April 30, 2009 President Brogan recognized Salkini with the award during the evening commencement ceremony which included graduates from the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs. Salkini was accompanied by his wife Iman, two of his daughters, and his close friend and business associate Glenn Ehley ’87.
In 1981, at the age of 17, Salkini emigrated on his own from Syria to Miami, where he turned his childhood interest in electronics into an academic pursuit. While attending FAU, he also worked part-time at IBM. Following his graduation in 1985 from FAU with his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, he took a position at Siemens working on software development for telecommunications switching systems. While at Siemens, he continued graduate study and received his master of computer engineering degree in 1990. He then joined Nortel as a consultant. Wireless communication was an emerging field when he started, but it has since become one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. He parlayed his early experience into the opportunity to found his own company, Tecore Networks in 1991 and is now one of the longest serving CEO’s in the telecommunications industry.
Salkini envisioned, developed, and patented a wireless technology that has been installed in networks around the globe. In this regard, Tecore is a member of an elite group of companies supplying the infrastructure that serves over four billion subscribers. Tecore’s solutions have been recognized by major industry groups, including the GSM Association and the Cellular Telephone Industry Association. The company has grown revenues and profits consistently since its inception and has also achieved the prestigious ISO9001:2000 quality certification. Tecore is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland and has an Advanced Radio Technology Center in Melbourne, Florida.
Salkini remembers his alma mater fondly. "FAU provided me with the technical education that helped me launch my career, and it is also where I discovered that in the United States, the opportunity to succeed is available to anyone based on the merits of their work."
